“The Handmaiden” directed by Park Chan Wook, became the first Korean film to be nominated for best non-English film category of the 2018 British Academy Film Awards.

The BAFTA (British Academy Film Awards) is a yearly held ceremony that awards the best and biggest films in the industry.

Going up against “The Handmaiden,” are Paul Verhoeven’s “Elle” (France), Angelina Jolie’s “First They Killed My Father” (Cambodia), Andrey Zvyagintsev’s “Loveless” (Russia), and Asghar Farhadi’s “Salesman” (Iran).

“The Handmaiden” is a film about the heiress who inherited enormous wealth from the Japanese colonial period and a maid who was hired by a man who was trying to steal her money.

The film was led by Kim Min Hee, Kim Tae Ri, Ha Jung Woo and Cho Jin Woong. Originally by British writer Sarah Waters’ novel “Fingersmith.”

My Thoughts

I watched “The Handmaiden,” it was okay, it’s a film about two women falling in love. To me, it didn’t feel much special, I didn’t understand why they made a big fuss about it. The film could be seen inspiring, different and a Korean film that pushes boundaries, which is true. Koreans are a lot more experimental with their movies apposed to their dramas.

Congrats to the movie for the nomination, its an important milestone for films of South Korea, rarely do we see them being mentioned in international award shows.
