Gong Yoo Responds To The Mixed Reactions To His Newest Drama “The Silent Sea,” What He Has To Say Will Surprise You
Gong Yoo has personally addressed the mixed responses “The Silent Sea” has received.
“The Silent Sea” marks Gong Yoo’s first drama since the massive hit “Goblin.” Some fans had high expectations but were left disappointed after watching the drama. The drama received mixed responses from fans and critics, with some labeling it a ‘disappointment’ while others calling it ‘innovative, engaging and fun.’
In a recent interview, Gong Yoo personally addressed the mixed responses, what did he have to say about it?
“I saw it thinking it was a pretty satisfactory result. I didn’t specifically want to do sci-fi genre, but I really wanted to do a series with specific genre, then I received the Sea of Silence, which was sci-fi.
I’m satisfied with how the drama came out.”
Gong Yoo then talked about knowing that some people will end up loving it while others would hate it when he first received the script,
“I expected the split to be even more extreme.
I knew there would be many perspectives the drama could be approached from such as scientific or historical investigation. Of course, there were shortcomings, and I know about some of negative views. But I think it was the best choice that we could achieve within the scope of reality and class we had.
Obviously, it’s not that we just did well, but I think it opened up the possibility for development. I think it was a meaningful first step (as Korean space science fiction).
There are some parts that I am personally satisfied with, and in a way, I think it was great for the first step in the genre of Korean sci-fi universe. Many people see it from various perspectives, and I think those different perspectives are what garner more interest in the drama, so I’m grateful.”

My personal thoughts- written by Jass K.
Well.. I am a bit surprised to find out he’s known this would get mixed responses but still chose to do it. I respect his opinion and his approach to the debate, I think its insightful, and from his point of view, its understandable why he’d want to do such a project. It makes me view him with an even better light.
I was one of the people who didn’t particularly like “The Silent Sea,” I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t like it as much as I had wanted to. You can read why here.
“The Silent Sea” should have been a bigger event or had a bigger impact, I still believe the poor characterization truly hindered the drama from reaching its full potential. But in the grand scheme of things, similarly to what Gong Yoo said, its a step in the right direction, you can’t and shouldn’t expect perfection from uncharted territory for Korean content.
I hope that Koreans continue to do sci-fi dramas or movies in the future and I personally can’t wait to see Gong Yoo in a new project soon.
Considero Gong Yoo un bravo attore..i suoi film migliori sono “The suspect “ “Train to Busan ” e “The Age of Shadows”. Ho visto “The Silent Sea” e a parte gli errori scientifici nella stesura della sceneggiatura, mi è piaciuto. Non amo i polpettoni sentimentali coreani,ma trovo il loro cinema molto buono.E sono sincera aspetto la seconda stagione di “The Silent Sea” sempre che il capitano sia vivo!I hope so…
To make a sci-fi project on a small budget is like giving somebody a stick to beat you in advance. What makes any sci-fi movie appealing for a viewer are special effects, CGIs, exceptional cinematography and directing and all this costs a lot of money. You need to make people believe that the action actually takes place (as for real) in space. Everyone knows that “The Silent Sea” was made on a small budget, the actors and director were saying it in their interviews and this is what Gong Yoo is referring when he is talking about challenges this drama faced. I remember I saw a documentary about how the movie “Gravity” was made. How the Director Alfonso Cuaron was filming Sandra Bullock floating inside the spaceship. She was spending hours and hours in some sort of harnesses in the air and he was filming it by small bits to look it natural. This takes a lot of money and studio’s technical possibilities. Sci-fi is associated with the cutting edge technology and you also need to show this. And again – this needs money. Gong Yoo floated in the air for 2 secs when they entered that space station and it looked so awkward and unrehearsed, and you know – cheap. Basically, apart from their space suits there was nothing which would make you believe that it is a sci-fi. You remove their suits in The Silent Sea and it is no different than to watch a drama taking place in an office for example.
I understand his choice though – he wants to do something innovative, something which excites him. And the choice for innovation is poor if you want to do a drama. They can’t even change the format from 16 episodes, they still show us the happy endings and a mandatory wedding at the end if it is a romance and if god forbid the leads share a kiss.
I do not regret watching it though, one thing was very interesting to me from the scientific point of view – is that that idea of self-dividing water. We all know that the population on Earth is growing and that the water resources are limited. And writing about it shows that humanity is already thinking and preparing itself for the times when they will be not water for everyone. I am sure that given the possibilities, they could have made a brilliant movie based on that.
