JTBC’s Hit Drama “Doctor Cha” has come under fire for its recent episode!

JTBC’s Hit Drama “Doctor Cha” has faced criticism from viewers for its portrayal of Crohn’s disease, which is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. The drama is reported to have misrepresented the disease by portraying it as a “bad disease,” and there are concerns that this could lead to misunderstandings about the condition among the public.

The issue arose after a scene in the drama depicted a character with Crohn’s disease contemplating suicide due to the difficulties he was facing. Moreover, there was a character who said insensitive things about the disease, such as “how can you hide this bad disease and get married?” These scenes have sparked controversy and complaints have been filed with the Korea Communications Standards Commission [KCSC].

On May 9, an official from the Korea Communications Standards Commission said in a statement, “To date, a total of 43 complaints have been received regarding the broadcast. We are reviewing the related contents.”

Crohn’s disease is a chronic disease that affects the gastrointestinal tract, causing inflammation and ulcers. It is a lifelong condition that requires careful management, but it can be treated through various therapies, including medication and surgery. While it can be a challenging disease to manage, with proper care, people with Crohn’s disease can live full and productive lives.

As a result, posts calling for complaints to the Korea Communications Standards Commission are constantly appearing on online cafes for patients with Crohn’s disease. As agreement comments that they have reported the broadcast are increasing, there are also growing voices that the episode should be deleted from replay and other platforms.

In response, JTBC said they were currently looking into the situation.
