The cast of the highly anticipated Netflix series “Black Knight” has recently sat down for its press conference, here is what they had to say about the new drama!
On May 10th, a press conference was held. Actors Kim Woo Bin, Song Seung Heon, Esom, Kang Yoo Seok, and director Jo Eui-seok attended the event.
“Black Knight” is a series set in a future Korean peninsula where people cannot survive without oxygen due to severe air pollution. It depicts the story of legendary delivery man 5-8 and refugee Sa Wol as they confront the Cheonmyeong Group, which dominates the new world.
In a world where the Earth has become barren and resources are scarce due to a comet collision, legendary delivery man 5-8 (Kim Woo Bin) is responsible for delivering oxygen and necessities to people and ensuring their survival in a society with a more rigid class structure. Ryu Seok (Song Seung Heon), the representative of Cheonmyeong Group, lives a life that seems disconnected from the outside world full of yellow dust. Sa Wol (Kang Yoo Seok) is a refugee who dreams of becoming a delivery man, and Lieutenant Seol-ah (Esom), is an information officer who investigates mysterious incidents.
Director Jo Eui-seok said, “It’s a story about 5-8, who transforms into a knight to protect refugees, delivering oxygen and necessities for survival during the day and changing into a knight to change the world’s order at night. Think of it as a sort of volunteer corps. That’s why we named the series ‘Black Knight’ in English.”
The Black Knight is a group of 11 refugee deliverymen, and Kim Woo Bin explained during the conference that only strong people can become deliverymen because they have to go through hunters to deliver goods. He also mentioned that he thought deeply about why his character and others in the story would act and think the way they do, especially since his character was born as a refugee.
Kim Woo Bin said, “Until recently, we were all wearing masks. After reading the script, I thought that something like this could happen in the future. I was interested in the fact that various characters appear in the drama, and I especially decided to take on the role of 5-8 because I was curious about the character.”
Song Seung Heon described his character Ryu-seok as the representative of the Cheonmyeong group who uses oxygen to create a new order. He mentioned that his character may be seen as an antagonist in a binary way, but he has his own beliefs and reasons for his actions, and viewers will come to understand his character more as the series progresses. He said, “I heard about this story a few years ago when Director Cho Ui-seok was planning this project. I became curious about the world of the ‘delivery man’ and the image of the near-future Earth becoming a desert. Also, since I have been friends with Director Cho for over 20 years, I had trust in him. Whatever story the director tells, I wanted to join if there was a role I could play.”
Song Seung Heon also added that “when the familiar sight of Seoul, such as the Namsan Tower, collapses and is depicted as a desert, viewers may feel a sense of novelty. While filming, I thought a lot about the environment. We take the gift of oxygen for granted, but if that kind of world were to come, it would be a big problem. This work made me more aware of the environment.”
Kang Yoo Seok plays the role of Sa-wol, who strives to become a delivery driver said, “Each character in the drama has its own charm. If you compare the current Seoul with the desolate background of the drama, it will be interesting to watch.” He also said that he focused on expressing Sa-wol as a bright, cheerful, and hopeful character even in a desertified world. Director Jo Eui-seok praised Kang Yoo Seok’s acting skills, saying, “When we talked, he was calm, but his performance was impressive.” He also revealed that he thought of casting Kang Yoo Seok after several meetings with him. Kim Woo Bin expressed happiness that Kang Yoo Seok could gain recognition through this drama, saying, “I think he will become a well-known actor through this project.”
Esom talked about her character, she said, “From the first time I read the script, it was interesting to see the existence of delivery drivers, which have become commonplace in our daily lives, being reborn as those responsible for someone’s life.” She also expressed her curiosity about how director Jo Eui-seok would tell the story of the famous webtoon.
