After what seemed like an eternity, “If You Wish Upon Me” has finally aired and here are my thoughts on the premiere.

Note: this article is a first-impression review, it doesn’t mean this is the writer’s final thoughts on the drama. This is a spoiler review.

“If You Wish Upon Me” is led by a star-studded cast including wookie, Sooyoung and everybody’s favorite ahjussi Sung Dong-Il.

Going in, I had some expectations in my head and it was fulfilled, and at times, it went beyond my expectations.

I think this is my fav premiere episodes of a wookie drama in quite some time now. I have been critical of his recent projects as some of you may know, its because I know he can do better, not in terms of acting because he always delivers, but in terms of picking the right project.

One of the first things I liked was how the introductions weren’t too much. It wasn’t cringy either. It sort of threw you in and showed you what these characters are instead of telling you. It takes more effort and I appreciate it whenever I see it.

The article is titled like this because I sort of anticipated it happening but also didn’t expect to cry so soon. Honestly, the moment I knew the cute dog is terminally ill I was like ‘why you do this to me?’

As a huge animal lover this is about one of the most painful things you can show me. Whenever Yoon Gyeo-Rye talked to him, I was fighting back tears. What am I gonna do when it dies? I can’t..

I actually ended up crying many times throughout the premiere of “If You Wish Upon Me.” I liked how it put you in the middle of the story but still did a great job making you feel a connection towards it. If you guys don’t know, thats not easy to pull off. It can come off a bit insensitive if done wrong.

I also didn’t expect for them to hint that Yoon Gyeo-Rye’s father might be Kang Tae-Sik. I think that would be a very interesting story to approach. I would love it if it turns out he’s actually his father. There is so much to explore there and it would be very interesting to see their characters evolve as they learn to embrace each other and as Yoon Gyeo-Rye contemplates forgiving his father for what he’s done to him.

It looks like we’ll mostly be going with a very realistic approach and I hope it stays that way. I have a feeling the screenwriter shall touch on a lot of topics including the many societal issues in Korea through the lens of a hospice.

The idea itself of granting wishes to terminally ill patients is so heartwarming.

I liked everybody’s performance, and I especially loved Sung Dong-Il’s. He’s a veteran, and its always fun watching him in whatever drama he’s in.

Wookie does it again with his performance here, I felt so bad for his character, Yoon Gyeo-Rye must have been through hell and back. It will be very nice watching him let go of the past and be happy again.

Sooyoung is, again, such a boss. I like her acting. The three actors share good synergy which is important for such types of dramas.

In short, I have now even higher expectations from “If You Wish Upon Me.” I think if the drama follows a similar structure to this week’s episodes, it will be an interesting, heartbreaking and heartwarming watch. I also think wookie can aim for the daesang award at the KBS drama awards depending on how the drama progresses.

I wish the best for the cast and crew of the drama and I will surely be following it. However, I advice you to keep tissues nearby cause the waterfalls won’t stop.

So, what did you guys think of If You Wish Upon Me premiere? did you enjoy it?

  1. I like that trio of actors, they are all very entertaining. But based on the first two episodes, I am afraid I may find the stories not very interestingly done. And the drama is 16 episodes. There was a Japanese drama Lion no Oyatsu with a similar plot and the story of each patient was beautifully done. I wish the achieved the same here.
