“Why Her?” Episode 14 recap [the Jae Yi part only]

“Why Her?” Episode 14 begins with Oh Soo Jae talking to CEO Choi who tells her not to dig into the incident that happened 10 years ago. He knows she’s getting closer to the truth and throws a curve ball, tells her she has a daughter.

Turns out that Jae Yi is her daughter. Oh Soo Jae and Choi Ju Wan had slept together and she went to the U.S. to deliver the baby. Back then, CEO Choi lied to her and told her she had a stillbirth and hid the baby from her. He shows a paternity test that proves it.

When she finds out, she goes into shock mode and is unable to concentrate anymore. CEO Choi then diverts the conversations towards how she will never be able to find out what truly happened back then and that she should join his hands and climb up the ladder. She says, ‘you sicken me, I loathe you.’ She walks out, then, she confronts Choi Ju Wan as she leaves and slaps him in front of everybody. He’s not happy she found out but soon finds out why the father told her this.

Later, Oh Soo Jae says she’s still a bit unsure if its her child and asks Lim Seung-Yeon to bring her her hair. She also meets Jae Yi and hangs out with her briefly.

Things go South at the end of “Why Her?” Episode 14 when Oh Soo Jae first reads the paternity test results and is now sure she’s her daughter. She plans to meet and dine with Gong Chan to tell him something important but Lim Seung-Yeon calls and tells her she’s lost Jae Yi. Jae Yi didn’t react well when her mother told her she’s leaving to the U.S. and that she has to stay with her father.

After searching for her for a while, Oh Soo Jae finds Jae Yi. She walks her to her parents and promises her she’ll do her best to help her stay by her mother’s side. Jae Yi is happy.

However, Jae Yi gets too excited as she sees her parents and crosses the road and gets hit by a car. She dies on impact. Gong Chan arrives by taxi and he sees Oh Soo Jae on the ground wailing.

They take Jae Yi to the hospital but the doctor fails to save her. Everyone breaks down, while Gong Chan doesn’t know anything yet he suspects something as he sees Oh Soo Jae go to the operating room despite doctors refusal. She holds her child in her arms and cries her heart out.

Reactions to “Why Her?” Episode 14

Reactions to the 14th episodes have been mixed. While some are praising the screenwriter for the shocking twist, others believe the screenwriter had gone too far when they killed off the child. Many argue its not the best writing decision to kill off a child instead of the murderers and rapists in the drama who roam around free.

What everybody agrees on is the fact that Seo Hyun Jin’s acting in this episode has been particularly impressive and that she deserves the daesang for her role in this drama.

“Why Her?” Episode 14 review

Uhm…. I did suspect something was up between Soo Jae and Ju Wan but the child part was shocking to me and I believe many others. Soo Jae truly went through hell and back, this makes her character all that more impressive and intriguing from a writing perspective. She’s truly one of the most interesting characters of a female kdrama lead I’ve seen in 2022.

Some of you guys have been saying the child’s death wasn’t an accident, I think that would be a bit far-fetched but hey, anything can happen at this point in this drama. If it is, then its toooooo cruel.

Thus far, I believe Seo Hyun Jin deserves the daesang for her acting in this drama, at least for the SBS drama awards. It’ll be very difficult to dethrone her from the title, but we have 6 more months to go… anything can happen.

Regardless, its been so much fun watching Seo Hyun Jin. Her crying scene sent shivers down my spine. A mother losing her child is indescribable, she did so well in that scene. Truly the best Kpop idol-turned-actress EVER.

I believe the screenwriter did this because Jae Yi’s death will serve as the catalyst for Soo Jae’s full-on attack. She’s now a woman who isn’t afraid of losing anything, she’s already lost the one thing that mattered to her the most. She’s now broken and probably dead on revenge and she’s ruthless.

So what did you guys think of this episode?

  1. I cried a lot during and after watching this episode. Because she just met her child. She just found out an was just getting used to the idea of being a mother again.
While I admit that it is a shocking plot twist, I agree that it may be the catalyst Soo Jae needs to finally put away Chairman Choi and his henchmen and their children.
But despite the genius of the writers to kill Jae Yi, it is a really callous ending for the young child and a sad end to Soo Jae’s motherhood. She never got to call her herdaughter and she never heard Jae Yi call her ‘mom’.

  3. The death of the child was uncalled for. It would far be more believable if the grandpa kidnaps her to threaten soo jae but the scriptwriter didn’t want to go this predictable path. But her death Is still quite unnecessary especially she was just introduced to the story. I still don’t think it adds any value to the story except that soo jae have a miserable life.
