Heo Sung Tae has recently sat down for an interview and revealed the weight he’s gained to play his role in “Squid Game” and how much it took a toll on him.
Heo Sung Tae plays the role of Jang Deok Soo, a gangster who enters the squid game competition. Heo Sung Tae has been gaining so much love for his performance in the drama and he revealed the lengths he’d gone to in order to portray his character correctly.
“At the time, COVID-19 contributed to the postponement of all my projects. I was on a diet because I had no work, so I weighed about 73kg. When I first met the director, he asked me why I had lost so much weight, and told me the physique of Deok Soo was vital for his character.”
As a result, Heo Sung Tae revealed that he gained so much weight in a month, he gained about 15~17 kg [33 to 37 lb], he added,
“I think it was the first time I gained so much weight in such a short period of time. I went on a diet after I was done with the filming and lost 10 kg [22 lbs]. My health became so bad because I gained so much weight in a short period. The muscles on my calf tore and my knees also hurt. Overall, my health took a hit.”
Heo Sung Tae also surprised fans by revealing gaining weight was more difficult for him than losing it. In the future, he says he’ll think more before taking on roles that require him to gain a lot of weight in a short period.
Heo Sung Tae also revealed that he was able to act comfortably around his cast members after he had many discussions with them.
What did you think of Heo Sung Tae’s performance in “Squid Game”?
My personal thoughts- written by Jass K.
Heo Sung Tae is such a terrific actor. I agree with the director, the physique of Deok Soo was vital. Now looking at how much weight Heo Sung Tae has lost, I don’t think I would have feared and hated his character if he was this skinny because he doesn’t look threatening at all with this weight.
I remember seeing Heo Sung Tae in “Beyond Evil” earlier this year, it appears he weighed more back then too but when I saw “Squid Game” two weeks ago I was surprised because he was even bigger than I recalled in “Beyond Evil.” Now it makes sense because he filmed “Squid Game” before “Beyond Evil.”
Regardless, I am happy he’s received so much love for his performance.
