The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has stepped up to clarify reports about the South Korean government not covering expenses for BTS’s trip to New York as special envoys.

On September 30, Chosunilbo reported that the government had not covered any of BTS’s expenses including travel, lodging, and food expenses for their trip as special envoys accompanying President Moon Jae In

The report alleged the trip expenses, which lasted for three days, were not covered. As a result, the Blue House and responsible personals were heavily criticized for not covering BTS’s expenses despite their appointment as special envoys, many netizens expressed their disappointment after reading the report.

Following the report, The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism told news outlets that upon checking, the government has indeed paid for some of the expenses for BTS’s trip, they didn’t pay for the entire expenses but they partially covered some of them, they stated they were checking the records.

According to The Blue House, the expenses have already been settled and agreed on in advance that they would cover part of the travel and lodging expenses of envoys BTS.

It was also stated that since BTS had been invited by the United Nations as a separate entity only some of the expenses were covered by the government.

BTS has been appointed the Special Presidential Envoy for Future Generations and Culture back in July of 2021. They were invited by the UN to speak at the General Assembly as youth representatives. They accompanied the president to New York in September and delivered a speech on September 20 at the Sustainable Development Goals Moment (SDG Moment) at the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
