Something odd is happening in relation to the relationship confirmation between Lee Seung Gi and Lee Da In.

The couple has confirmed they’re dating last week and the news was mostly welcomed by fans who said they’ll support the couple. However, amid that, there was a growing number of fans who also didn’t like the fact that Lee Seung Gi was dating Lee Da In, but its not for the reason you think.

The reason is because fans fear for Lee Seung Gi’s reputation which he’s cultivated for the past 17 years. Lee Seung Gi is known for his clean and kind image which is why some fans are surprised by whom he’s dating.

Lee Seung Gi has probably inadvertently set a record becoming the first Korean actor to get a protest truck after they confirm their dating news. Protest trucks have become a popular way fans use to demonstrate their complaints. However, the protest trucks are often sent not to the individual Kpop idol or actor but for their agency, and they’re often sent as a protest for the way an agency treats an idol or a group. This is the first time this has happened to a Korean actor that one ‘fan’ has sent a protest truck because of a dating news confirmation.

The protest truck has been circulating around and displays the following messages,

  • Lee Da In’s family] had created too many victims
  • It’s okay if you didn’t know, we’ll inform you now. They have created too many victims.
  • Are you willing to destroy your 17-year-old career? A quick decision must be made.
  • We have protected you for the past 17 years. It is now your turn to protect Airens (Lee Seung Gi’s fandom).

But why are some fans against Lee Seung Gi dating Lee Da In specifically? It is clearly not about the fact that he’s dating but about the person he’s with.

The negativity and backlash stems from Lee Da In’s family background. Lee Da In’s mother is actress Kyeon Mi Ri, one of the biggest Korean actresses. She’s married to business man Lee Hong Heon, who is also Lee Da In’s stepfather. He’s currently in jail.

Lee Hong Heon was previously charged with stock manipulation and insider trading on two occasions in 2009 and 2018.

But what did the fan mean by victims?

The family has been embroiled in a recent controversy over the stepfather actions, he was arrested and charged with alleged stock price manipulation from November 2014 to February 2016. He used his wife’s name to buy stocks, the wife had denied any involvement and the stepfather was sentenced to prison.

According to the Korea Times, Lee Hong Heon was sentenced to four years in prison at the first trial and was slapped with a massive fine of 2.5 billion won[ 2,24 $ million].

Many netizens claim this has led to the downfall and misery of many families, some of which went into bankruptcy as a result of what he’d done.

This is why some fans are worried about Lee Seung Gi’s reputation as he’s involved with a family that has such a history.

Despite this, the majority of fans remain supportive of the relationship.

Many fans also believe the person who sent the truck shouldn’t be labelled a fan but a hater.

  1. Korean Netizens seem to be committed to holding family members responsible for a convicted felon’s crime, but if the family was guilty, they’d be in prison too. In Lee Da In’s case, she did not manipulate stock prices or cause anyone to go bankrupt. Holding her accountable for her step-Father’s crime is wrong. Therefore, Lee Seung Gi is not besmirched by his relationship with her. She might feel ashamed of her step-Father, but she bears no guilt.
