“Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol” is the type of fun lighthearted kdrama that I think a lot of people need at such times.

I had some expectations from “Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol” and the fact that the drama kept getting delayed made me even more excited because I guessed, they wanted to perfect it. I wouldn’t say the premiere was anything special but it doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy my time. Lets talk about why I think so.

Screenwriter Oh Ji Young

“Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol” is written by Screenwriter Oh Ji Young who also wrote “Terius Behind me” and “Shopping King Louis.”

“Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol” is shockingly similar in its structure to “Shopping King Louis.” They both talk about extremely rich characters who get stripped of their luxuries and have to deal with life realities.

I was excited for the drama but forgot who wrote it and when I revisited the credits; I kinda got nervous because her last drama, “Terius Behind me,” didn’t make an ounce of sense. I still can’t believe among the 2019 dramas nominated, it walked out with the best script award.

The issue with Screenwriter Oh Ji Young scripts is that they can become nonsensical pretty fast.

I think the screenwriter means for “Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol” to be lighthearted and fun, but thus far, from a script standpoint, I find nothing remotely special about the idea. It feels like an idea that should’ve been made in 2004 and would’ve probably been a huge hit.

The damsel in distress and the rich son hiding from his powerful parents, the ideas are just too basic for a kdrama made in 2020.

However, I’d like to say that the comedy part in “Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol” is my favorite thus far, most of the intended jokes land well and the absurdity of some situations are quite fun to watch. Screenwriter Oh Ji Young does the comedy part quite well and she always has.

Lee Jae Wook’s amazing performance

Lee Jae Wook can make even the most insufferable characters likeable; imagine what he’d do with a character that was written to be loved?

Lee Jae Wook’s performance is just astonishing here; I can’t believe he’s a rookie actor. I am slightly surprised he chose this script as his first leading project but if I had to guess, I think he wants to build a fanbase more than collect accolades at this point in his career.

Usually, rom-coms are pretty easy to digest and the average viewer enjoys them. It’s the perfect genre to gain and grow a fandom, this is why most rookie actors choose rom-coms for starters before venturing out to other more difficult genres.

Go Ara’s insufferable character

I am honestly surprised by Go Ara’s choice, especially at this point in her career. I would assume such a role would be given to a rising rookie actress who is also looking to build a fanbase, not a seasoned actress who’s been in the game for approximately two decades.

The character so far is quite honestly insufferable. Basically, a leech. A standard damsel in distress who always needs a saving and can’t for the life of her function like a normal human being. This has to be the worst written character in the drama thus far.

I am surprised such characters are still getting written to be honest with you. The sheer stupidity of Ra Ra is difficult to comprehend. Even if you were spoiled as a child, the fact that she is so clueless about how the world runs is unbelievable. She’s like a Disney princess without the likability.

Watching her character stumble and fumble through the episode wasn’t my favorite part. Lee Jae Wook steals the spotlight from her on multiple occasions and in certain scenes, I felt Go Ara’s acting was unbelievable as if she wasn’t convinced in what her character was uttering. I see cracks in her performance which is something unacceptable from an actress who’s been in the industry for 17 years.

Conclusion

“Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol” episode 2 was fun but beneath the surface, I already see issues and I don’t know how to feel about it. It’s lighthearted and easy to digest but needed more depth. I expected more from the highly anticipated rom-com. I think it can score better ratings next episode but it’ll have to try harder because this particular timeslot that its airing on has been struggling for quite some time.

I honestly wish for “Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol” to succeed and get better ratings with each episode. I hope people will support Lee Jae Wook’s first ever lead project.

So what about you guys? what did you think of “Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol” episode 2?

  1. ILoved it!! I am one of Go Ara’s fans. She is amazing and the lead actor as well. I am so looking forward for this drama for a long time. Looking at Go Ara, already makes me smile. She got this funny charm that I cannot explain. I think she is lovely not only as an actress but as a person. With regards to this drama. I am easy, as long it can make laugh and “kilig”….it’ll do me. Fighting!
