Singer Jeon Somi has recently signed with Interscope Records to jump start her promotions in the U.S.

The news was exclusively shared through a report by Variety and later confirmed by Somi’s agency The Black Label.

Interscope Records, a label under Universal Music Group that also include artists such as including BLACKPINK, Lady Gaga, Eminem, Maroon 5, Kendrick Lamar, Imagine Dragons, Billie Eilish, and more.

Executive Vice President and Head of A&R told Variety,

“Somi stands out with her unique and worldly approach to pop music. She is poised to be the next international breakout artist and is yet another great addition to the blossoming relationship we continue to build with Teddy Park, Black Label and the entire YG family.”

Somi also shared her excitement to join the label in a statement to Variety,

“I’m very excited to join the Interscope and Universal Music family. They have a great roster of artists I love and a long history of breaking acts. I’m looking forward to the next steps in my career and can’t wait to share my music with the world!”

Jeon Somi is scheduled to return with “What You Waiting For” on July 22.

My Personal Thoughts

With all the Kpop groups signing up with American labels, it’s no longer about merely getting signed but actually achieving something out of it.

I still haven’t seen Jeon Somi’s potential as an artist; she made her debut more than a year ago through one single song and is following that with only another song more than a year into her solo debut. By this point, you’d expect a mini album to kick start things but we’re talking YG and Teddy.

I don’t trust YG’s labels to do a good job managing their female artists, call me cynical but I’ll forever be reminded by CL and how she was supposed to conquer the U.S with her music.

It’ll be interesting to see if Somi breaks into the U.S market. And with COVID-19, the signing has been announced at a challenging time.

Good luck Somi, I am excited about your single release tomorrow.
