The controversy surrounding “Backstreet Rookie” is getting more attention after it was revealed that the SBS drama may receive disciplinary action for the sexually suggestive scenes in the drama.

As previously reported, many netizens found issues with “Backstreet Rookie” episode 1, there were many controversial scenes in the first episode and many of those scenes are sexually suggestive despite the rating of the drama being 15+. You can read more about those scenes here.

According to a report by Media Today, “Backstreet Rookie” has received 6,384 civil complaints, a shocking number of complaints according to the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KOCSC), they stated that the show received the greatest number of complaints in the last year and is one of the shows that received the greatest numbers of complaints.

KOCSC’s subcommittee (chairwoman Heo Mi Sook) held a meeting in Seoul on July 8 and they have decided to listen to the production team statement after determining that the first episode of “Backstreet Rookie” (June 19 broadcast) violated provisions of broadcasting regulations including “maintaining class” and “broadcasting language.”

The deliberation committee also criticized “Backstreet Rookie” ratings, the original webtoon which the drama is based on is rated 19+, but “Backstreet Rookie” is rated 15+. The committee stated that they believe the drama was careless when it came to the editing and the content of the drama.

Committee member Kang Jin Sook also criticized the drama for objectifying women and treating them like a commodity.  The webtoon had previously been under fire for objectifying teenage girls. Kang Jin Sook believes that the drama also has scenes that objectify women and questioned whether the drama could be enjoyed together with the family.

After many complaints, the controversial scenes of “Backstreet Rookie” were edited out of reply VOD services.

My Personal Thoughts

The mere reason I think many of us are still here is the cast. We love Ji Chang Wook and Kim Yoo Jung; otherwise, I highly doubt this drama would’ve gotten half the attention.

Back when the news of the drama getting made came out, I remember the many people who criticized SBS for producing a drama that’s based on a webtoon that objectifies teenage girls treating them like some fantasy object for the ahjussis. I saw some of the content, and oh my dear god…. disturbing is the least you could say about it.

I wonder who’s helping Kim Yoo Jung pick her projects… cuz we need to talk!!!

I understand that Kim Yoo Jung wants to ditch her child-actress image but this isn’t it. Leaving Ji Chang Wook aside for a moment, I’d assume Kim Yoo Jung is a lot more careful picking projects especially ones like this. Didn’t she read the webtoon? Or at least hear about it? How could she agree to such a project? I bet she gets loads of scripts, how about playing the college girl?

“Backstreet Rookie” is a far cry from “Moonlight Drawn By Clouds,” and the sad thing is, this will haunt Yoo Jung for a while. The same goes for Wookie.

I thought the 1st episode was needlessly sexually suggestive and the reason it took me back by surprise was just how much it differed from what they advertised. I still don’t understand the justification behind making this drama.

  1. I personally loooove JCW and like Kim Yoo Jung coz i think she’s really good in acting but for the first time, I lost interest in watching JCW’s drama. Even his last one was super disappointing, just finished it because he looked really good in it lol! After watching 2eps, i gave up. I understand why it’s getting a lot of complaints, I’m not the conservative type but there are a lot of unnecessary provocative scenes. Even the story line is poor. I’m disappointed at JCW’s choice of drama after military to be honest. He said on interviews before that he like romcom but i think it doesn’t showcase his talent. I hope he choose a better, more mature ones, or do another drama/action. That suits him better.
