“It’s Okay To Not Be Okay” ratings aren’t as well as fans have expected!

“It’s Okay To Not Be Okay” premiered to 6.1% in ratings with its first episode but it hasn’t been able to surpass that with its following episodes.

According to Nielsen Korea, “It’s Okay To Not Be Okay” 4th episode ratings fell back by 1%. It rated an average of 4.9% nationwide with 6% in the Seoul area. Its 3rd episode had done better getting an average of 5.9% in ratings, nationwide.

Fans are noticing a pattern; Saturday episodes are doing better than Sunday’s episodes. However, fans are still wondering why the drama hasn’t been able to score better ratings despite its script, actors, and cinematography.

“It’s Okay To Not Be Okay” has been getting a lot of favorable reactions and reviews from fans all around the world. It also marks Kim Soo Hyun first post-military drama, it has been creating a lot of buzz ahead of its premiere.

Have you seen the drama yet? Why do you think it’s not doing as well as expected in ratings?

My Personal Thoughts

I am surprised the drama isn’t doing better as well honestly. Personally speaking, I found episode 3 and 4 way better than the premiere. If you had high high expectations going in, seeing the premiere might’ve left you disappointed.

As someone who’s been watching kdramas for a long time now, I know the first episodes aren’t any kdrama best episodes (in most cases), many of them get better as time goes by and this seems to be the case for “It’s Okay To Not Be Okay.”

The 3rd and 4th episodes were amazing. Kwak Dong Yeon’s cameo made the 3rd episode epic, he was so great, he’s a terrific actor.

There is still a lot to unpack with “It’s Okay To Not Be Okay,” but will 16 episodes be suitable or not? I hope they have enough material for 16 episodes.

So far, I am enjoying it and I can’t wait for next week’s episodes.

  1. Despite the huge appeal of the main two leads, I think the subject matter and how mental illness is being depicted is hurting the drama ratings. After 4 episodes this drama is leaving me with sad and uneasy feelings which are, in my opinion, not the predominant emotional responses desired for a romantic drama . Rather than continue down this path, I haven’t decided to continue watching as I was seeking more romance than psychological thriller. Other members may be feeling this as well thus the decline. Romantic genre dramas for the die hard fans must have certain characteristics to do well, and so far this drama is lacking several. In addition, any secondary love between other characters has not even surfaced or developed yet. Things feel a little one tract at the moment. The fact that they have completely failed to develop any background for other characters such as to why Jo Jae Soo, who is only listed as a support actor, is even a part of their lives and has stuck with the brothers through all this hardship thus adding to making the story feel incomplete. If I continue will depend on my mood. As for now, I need some love and romance and will seek out a different romantic drama to make my heart happy.

  3. I am not surprised at all. The content is too dark and too overwhelming to my taste and the drama almost glorifies the mental sickness to some extent. One autism family maybe enough to be included in a story and you can tell it well, but the whole drama full of different cases of mental illness is way too much. The main lead female character is supposed to have antisocial personality which is not curable medically, and now she is supposed to help the male lead by showing forced love with sick physical attraction, and be cured at the end? Makes no sense to me.
For acting, I have been watching Kim Soo Hyun from Dream High. His crying acting really impressed me at the time given his experience and age. But then, I found him crying the exact same way in different situations in every drama he acted since. I just can’t feel it any more. The way he acts with very little emotions in this drama reminds me a lot of “My Love from the Stars”, I think you can understand.
As for the female lead, if she could focus more on building characters rather than distracting audience with her fleshy clothes and hair styling, I would like her better although I still kind of skeptical of how her illness can be finally cured. After all, when you Google antisocial personality, all articles give advice on how to spot this kind of personality disorder and how to avoid those persons in relationships, LOL.
So I am curious how this is going to turn out, like you said, 12 more episodes to go.

  4. I love both actors…but the first 2 episodes left me disappointed. I couldn’t connect with the characters at all. For me, I have to feel something for characters before I can dedicate 16+ hours of my life to it. You are right that the first 2 episodes are usually terrible lol but there has to be something that brings you back. I felt that both leads were shallow, distant, cold, and cliches I have seen before. The female psycopath is getting a little old for me. But I am willing to give the next 2 eps a try because you said they were good. Thank you for writing this article!

  5. Exactlyyyy.. This drama is so lit. How come its ratings are so low. I don’t understand what korean nitizens actually like :/ Same was the case with eternal monarch. Like seriously?

    1. Im also confused with the ratings but personally i find this drama much much better than TKEM, tkem was super hard to watch, tho i finished it. The plot was a mess and some people say “only intellectuals understand this” but actually it’s just a big disappointment. I was hyped by this before tho.

  6. Cant really think why so…I was so excited even before its release and my excitement is still same..i just can wait to see upcoming episodes.I really hope it does well in ratings.#ItsOkayToNotBeOkay

  7. We are not so sure how Koreans are doing their rating. But we from North America likes the show. So real and Actors are playing their part really well. Story is something people can relate in real life. A there is a lot you can learn and look forward to. So I’m not sure how they do their rating.

  8. I dont know why the rating is like as what they show. My sister and i loves this drama. And the story is unique, it will give viewers new concept about drama. Kim soo hyun is really talented, and i like how cute and versatile seo ye ji is.
Hoping that this drama will get a higher rating because its very. Nice.

  9. I don’t know why the ratings in Korea are low. So far I still have the same excitement I had for the drama before it was premiered. Maybe not all viewers can catch or pace with the message of the drama. It has also some heavy scenes where you can experience a roller coaster of negative emotions balanced with comedy that might leave you exhausted. But, that’s the beauty of it. The way the drama portrays the characters they intend to show and the story they want to tell is actually impressive since the viewers are actually feeling and seeing it. I’m not expecting it to be a total romantic genre and cutesy drama since it tackles and focuses about mental health but my expectations are actually being exceeded because of the undeniably strong chemistry of the main leads. I’m more interested on how each of their stories will unfold, how will they cope up and live with what life gives them and to know if love is really possible or how could it be possible.
