“The King: Eternal Monarch” ratings aren’t improving!

On May 9, “The King: Eternal Monarch” aired its 8th episode and according to Nielsen Korea, the drama has recorded a new low.

Previously, the 7th episode of “The King: Eternal Monarch” was the lowest rating numbers the drama has ever achieved thus far, however, its 8th episode has officially become the lowest point for the series.

According to Nielsen Korea, “The King: Eternal Monarch” 8th episode (part 1 and 2) recorded an average of 6.1% and 8.1%, marking the first time the series reached 6% in its entire run and its lowest to date.

Despite the plot progressing in a faster pace for the past two weeks, “The King: Eternal Monarch” has been struggling to maintain viewership ratings in South Korea despite its massive popularity overseas. It has been the top Netflix drama each week because of international fans interest but this interest hasn’t been the same for k-netizens.

What are your thoughts on “The King: Eternal Monarch” so far?

My Personal Thoughts

If you read my blog then you know I’ve been critical of “The King: Eternal Monarch” because I expect the best from the writer and director. But I have to say episode 6,7 and 8 have been very nice. I just finished watching episode 8 and I really liked it, the series is finally picking up. I think its so sad that k-netizens have given up but considering everything “The King: Eternal Monarch” has been through, I kinda get it.

I wish “The King: Eternal Monarch” picks up next week.

  1. I stopped watching because the 1st few episodes are too boring. To reach episode 6 & 7, meaning I have to endure watching episode 4 & 5 in order to understand what is going on is too tiring. That’s why some of us gave up on this drama. Moreover the main actress Kim Go Eun is not eye candy at all. She is not beautiful at all therefore to create a fantasy drama with romance in mind, I am like what is so captivating about this lady that the king is so in love with her when he doesn’t even know her at all in the beginning. If this is a story about love growing stronger as time goes, then probably Kim Go Eun can be the choice though her acting is not that captivating too. Perhaps Park Min Young, Bae Suzy, Lee Sung Kyung, Han Hyo Joo, Shin Min-a will be much better choice.

    1. I disagree. I think she’s very beautiful! I dont think any other Korean actress could have portrayed two characters as well as she did, especially Luna.

  2. Episode 8 was nothing but PPL, clunky dialogue, and extraneous scenes. Even the “confession” was emotionless and met with a bland response. Seriously, if this was supposed to be a romance, they failed. If this was supposed to be a thriller/sci fi – they’ve failed. While some storylines are coming together if still feels like there’s much ado about nothing. Luna seems to be a fascinating character but she’s had all of 10 minutes of actual screen time. Every time they cut to a scene not involving the leads there’s some new character that leaves the audience wondering who it is without rhyme or reason. The over the top PPL really killed any momentum this episode may have had. This show is all over the place and not in a good way.

  3. Exactly you said , what I really wanted to tell. The ep 7 and 8 are really worth to give an another chance. People should not neglect this drama. Hope for the best viewership ratings next week.

  4. ‘some new character that leaves the audience wondering who it is’

This was our biggest complaint; who is that? Is it a real world person or a doppelgänger person? And why are so many friends and family fooled by doppelgängers since were all more than our appearance.

And so many of these seemed to be important for only one episode. All in all its a mess.

Contrast this with Live Up To Your Name which did stranger in a strange land much more cohesively and sensibly.
