The Reasons Why “The World Of The Married” Became Such A Massive Success Domestically And Overseas

1

“The World Of The Married” is currently one of the most talked-about dramas in kdramaland. The JTBC hit drama has already broken so many records and its not even halfway through.

“The World Of The Married” doesn’t have that stereotypical kdrama love story and doesn’t have hot young male leads to swoon over, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t going to enjoy the same level of success. In fact, it’s already the second-highest-rated drama in JTBC’s history and one of the highest-rated cable channel dramas, “The World Of The Married” did that with 6 episodes.

Since I am obsessed with this drama, I wanted to talk about it and discuss what I believe to the reasons behind its massive success.

Based on a completed work?

“The World Of The Married” is a remake of the British series “Doctor Foster” that had two seasons, the second ending in 2017. As far as a google search could tell me, there are no current concrete plans to return with a third season, so I assuming the series is somewhat finished.

But how does this tie to our kdrama?

Usually, kdramas are written as they’re filmed. While the first couple of episodes are filmed ahead of time, oftentimes, the screenwriter would write and the series would film simultaneously. This is why sometimes kdramas become lackluster and boring by its half run time and this is also why endings sometimes feel rushed or drawn out.

But that’s not the case with “The World Of The Married” because it’s based on a completed series. Meaning our Korean screenwriter has enough material to play around with.

This also means the drama was able to make the best of the material it had not having to worry about what to write next. The script turned out to be concise and as dramatic as you’d expect a drama about cheating to be while being equally entertaining and confusing.

The Interesting 3D Characters

Characters make the drama, and no matter how interesting the general storyline is, if your script characters lack substance it’s difficult for people to feel intrigued enough to follow.

That’s not an issue with “The World Of The Married,” not even one bit. No character is what they seem to be and they’re anything but your typical kdrama characters, this goes for the main and supporting characters.

The main characters are very intriguing and messed up. Kim Hee Ae’s character is also messed up and very volatile at times. There is no unexplainable ‘nice/well-behaved’ character. It’s about humans who make mistakes; the mother’s character is placed in a predicament and doesn’t know how to deal with it well at first, which is the reaction you’d expect of a normal human being.

The same goes for the supporting characters who are god awful and terrible as human beings but very interesting. The fact that they’re not what they seem to be adds substance to “The World Of The Married” and makes it even more interesting because their actions are unpredictable.

The Amazing Performances

Kim Hee Ae is an amazing veteran actress who’s been around since 1983. She has an amazing presence and acting chops. She literally carries the drama with her performance. But she’s not the only good one; every other actor and actress in this drama is also talented.

Park Hae Joon usually plays important supporting characters but he took on the leading role for this drama. He shines and proves to be an amazing lead actor. The same goes for Kim Young Min, Han So Hee and literally every other actor and actress in “The World Of The Married.”

The child actor in this drama was also chosen wisely because he’s doing a great job. He’s very stable and has been acting for a while now, he started in 2012. He will grow to become a great leading actor one day.

Conclusion: Where will it go from there?

“The World Of The Married” is a train wreck you can’t look away from. As far as I know, the original series ended with 10 episodes, meanwhile, the 7th episode of our drama will air today (April 17).

I don’t know how the writer plans on handling the rest of the series since he’s probably going to run out of material soon, but I am assuming he has already figured this out.

I know “The World Of The Married” comes off too dramatic at times and a bit unrealistic considering its nature, a drama about a cheating husband. But that’s what I’d expect from a drama. I just hope the writer doesn’t get too carried away, we still have 10 episodes to go.

“The World Of The Married” will either go down in history as one of the biggest and best kdramas or one of the best kdramas at the start that derailed around its 8th episode. I have my doubts and my worries but for now, I am thoroughly enjoying “The World Of The Married.”

What about you guys? what do you think made “The World Of The Married” such a hit?
