YG boy group WINNER performance on Korean charts is not living up to expectations!
On October 23 at 6 p.m. KST, WINNER made a comeback with their third mini-album “CROSS” and its title track “SOSO.” Upon its release, #WINNER_SOSO was trending at No. 1 on Twitter worldwide, fans were showing their support for WINNER.
A couple of hours after its release, the album ranked No. 1 on iTunes’ Top Albums chart in 23 regions including Hong Kong, Chile, India, Indonesia, Macao, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam, Argentina, Bolivia, Cambodia, and more.
However, the title song “CROSS” was barely able to top two of the six Korean charts and the song is slowly losing its spot to older songs that have been around on the charts a lot longer than “CROSS.”
As of this writing, “CROSS” sits at number 1 on Bugs, it’s been less than three days since the group comeback. Fans are disappointed to see the numbers, WINNER usually tops Korean charts shortly after each comeback, this is one of their worst-performing comebacks in recent memory. WINNER is known for being digital chart monsters.
But what went wrong?
On a post on a Korean website called theqoo, k-netizens discuss what could’ve led to these lackluster numbers. Some say it’s because of the ongoing YG boycott, while others state that the song is simply not measuring up to expectations, there are also some who don’t like WINNER’s new style and attempt at a different musical direction.
Read some of their comments:
“AKMU got first place on Melon, so no.. its not that they’re being boycotted.. Instead, WINNER’s new song is not good.”
“Its hard to rank well on Melon these days.”
“this time I don’t’ like the song, this is not their musical style that I like.”
“hul… I didn’t even know they had a comeback.”
“What’s going on with idols these days?”
“I like WINNER’s songs but this time I don’t like it.”
It’s important to point out that Kpop groups, in general, have been struggling to rank high on Korean music charts in 2019, 2019 has been dominated by indie artists and OSTs, some of which still dominate the charts months after their initial release.
What do you think could be the reason? Do you like WINNER new song?
