Why Isn’t WINNER Comeback Song Performing Well On Korean Charts?

Published Categorized as Kpop

YG boy group WINNER performance on Korean charts is not living up to expectations!

On October 23 at 6 p.m. KST, WINNER made a comeback with their third mini-album “CROSS” and its title track “SOSO.” Upon its release, #WINNER_SOSO was trending at No. 1 on Twitter worldwide, fans were showing their support for WINNER.

A couple of hours after its release, the album ranked No. 1 on iTunes’ Top Albums chart in 23 regions including Hong Kong, Chile, India, Indonesia, Macao, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam, Argentina, Bolivia, Cambodia, and more.

However, the title song “CROSS” was barely able to top two of the six Korean charts and the song is slowly losing its spot to older songs that have been around on the charts a lot longer than “CROSS.”

As of this writing, “CROSS” sits at number 1 on Bugs, it’s been less than three days since the group comeback. Fans are disappointed to see the numbers, WINNER usually tops Korean charts shortly after each comeback, this is one of their worst-performing comebacks in recent memory. WINNER is known for being digital chart monsters.

But what went wrong?

On a post on a Korean website called theqoo, k-netizens discuss what could’ve led to these lackluster numbers. Some say it’s because of the ongoing YG boycott, while others state that the song is simply not measuring up to expectations, there are also some who don’t like WINNER’s new style and attempt at a different musical direction.

Read some of their comments:

“AKMU got first place on Melon, so no.. its not that they’re being boycotted.. Instead, WINNER’s new song is not good.”

“Its hard to rank well on Melon these days.”

“this time I don’t’ like the song, this is not their musical style that I like.”

“hul… I didn’t even know they had a comeback.”

“What’s going on with idols these days?”

“I like WINNER’s songs but this time I don’t like it.”

It’s important to point out that Kpop groups, in general, have been struggling to rank high on Korean music charts in 2019, 2019 has been dominated by indie artists and OSTs, some of which still dominate the charts months after their initial release.

What do you think could be the reason? Do you like WINNER new song?

My name is Kevin Miller and I am responsible for writing Kpop content on Jazminemedia.com~ I have been a fan of Kpop since 2014 and I am a multi-stan

  1. I think the reason is, (just my opinion) No Nam, he was the voice and the visual kinda like the heart of the group I bet the company wish he was still there.

  2. Nah, he had left long time agooo why now? WINNER with 4 members has been doing well for last couple of years after he left. They get new fans too. GP taste just into ballads in this autumn.

  3. It’s not about ranking, they made the song to express themselves and for the fans. They wanted to explore other genres. And also, the albums they have released so far showed their growth as artists. The music they Produce are always unique. It’s was their genre.
Also, the people who criticizes the album did never understand what the album is all about. They are not even fans.

  4. its because winner was releasing “happy” songs and summer styles. soso is such a good song, the mv is a masterpiece, the people is just tasteless. im glad that winner didn’t go on the easy way and reales songs that people will like because they are knowing as summer styles

  5. Winner is not a ballad group which is why people did not like it. Although they changed their drama still a lot of people liked it. If you chech in twitter some fans from different kpop fandom watched SOSO, they appreciate it. Plus I’m happy to see WINNER unbothered from these comments.
