Jeon Somi made her solo debut on June 13 KST. Her track “Birthday” topped real-time charts shortly after release and its receiving positive reaction from the public.
On the same day, she held a press conference and answered reporters’ questions, one of the questions was about how she felt promoting while YG is going through controversies.

YG Entertainment has had a difficult 2019 and it doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. Their former artist B.I was embroiled in controversy over the alleged drug usage and the label founder Yang Hyun Suk was recently accused of threatening the informant Miss Han over B.I testimony. Miss Han who’s kakaotalk messages were the ones released by Dispatch. The same Kakaotalk messages were used to expose B.I alleged drug use.
Since she’s under YG sub-label The Black Label, this controversy is affecting her. She’s been working hard on her solo debut and it sadly happened around the same time as the many controversies.
About what she thought, she said,
“My solo debut itself was a long journey for me which I have prepared and waited for since a long time ago. So I didn’t get distracted and just tried my best and got ready for today.”
