The thing a lot of fans feared has finally been confirmed.
Earlier today, Song Hye Kyo and Park Bo Gum confirmed their appearance in the upcoming drama “Boyfriend.”
Despite the happy news and the highly anticipated return of two gigantic hallyu stars, a lot of kdrama fans were not happy with the pairing.
“Boyfriend” is currently in talks to air on tvN.
“Boyfriend,” tells the story of a woman who appears to have it all and an ordinary man who’s the complete opposite, it begs the question of whether its difficult to give up money and honor in exchange for a normal lifestyle.
Song Hye Kyo will play the role of Cha Soo Hyun, whose father occupied various political roles throughout his life, her family forced her to marry a chaebol son as soon as she graduated from college, she had a child with her husband, but eventually filed for divorce.
Park Bo Gum will play the role of Kim Jin Hyuk, an ordinary guy who works various part-time jobs while searching for a full-time one. He continues to fail in landing a regular job at the companies he wants to work in. With the money he collected from his part-time jobs, he begins a journey he has been planning for a year. There, he meets Cha Soo Hyun.
The drama will be produced by Bon Factory, the production company behind “What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim,” “She was Pretty,” and “Master’s Sun.”
This means that Park Bo Gum will be romancing Song Hye Kyo and a lot of fans had problems with that.
Some pointed out the age gap, Song Hye Kyo was born in 1981 while Park Bo Gum was born in 1993, they’re 12 years apart. Fans think that she is old enough to be his aunt or elder sister.
With such a large age gap, fans don’t think that they could see those two talented actors romancing each other on-screen; it would just be too awkward. Noona-romance dramas are great and all but with such a huge age gap you wonder whether they’d be able to pull it off.
In my opinion, I am not particularly worried about the age gap as much as the image planted in my mind already, the point which I will discuss now.
Other fans just don’t like the pairing because of their sibling-like relationship. Song Hye Kyo is married to Song Joong Ki who happens to be the good senior and friend of Park Bo Gum.
Park Bo Gum played the piano at their wedding and is known for being close to both actors. He has also been advertised as the sweet younger brother of Song Joong Ki because of their close relationship.
Fans are wondering if they can ever digest the romance between two figures that have been linked together that way. I don’t think a lot of people are excited about seeing Park Bo Gum kissing Song Hye Kyo, kissing the woman his best-friend is married to.
This is my problem with the casting of this drama. I am at a point where I let the age-gap slide but I just can’t digest the relationship that’ll evolve between them both on-screen.
I am also well aware that private life is a thing while professional is another but the image that the media and those actors themselves planted in our heads for the past couple of years are hard to shed.
I feel awkward and slightly disgusted imagining them together in any romantic fashion. There are dozens of beautiful young actresses around Song Hye Kyo’s age that could’ve been cast for the same role. The same goes for Park Bo Gum.
I would have preferred either of them accept the role while the other passes it.
Is it possible that we’re just too damn fast to judge a drama we haven’t seen yet?
There is a good chance that its true, but this doesn’t mean that, I, alongside many other kdrama fans will stop feeling that way about it. You can’t blame us a lot for that, because this is how we’ve been used to them for the past couple of years. This image we have of them is that of siblings, I can’t help but feel awkward and angry because of the casting choice.
In case you didn’t know, Korean actors are more reserved and shy. There have been many instances of actors and actresses unable to carry out good chemistry or kiss scenes because they’re dating/married to someone else.
I know that Park Bo Gum is extremely shy and adorable and I fear that his relationship with Song Hye Kyo will affect the way their chemistry plays out. We might not ever witness real romance in the drama. This is my biggest problem with this entire casting choice.
This is why I am very disappointed right now! I wanted to see them both on the small screen but not together.
