Jang Geun Suk fans were in for a shock when the actor’s agency Tree J Company revealed that he had bipolar disorder in a statement announcing his upcoming military enlistment date.

Here is their translated statement below:

“Good Morning. This is Tree J Company.

We are delivering Jang Geun Suk’s official position regarding his upcoming military enlistment. Jang Geun Suk was keen on serving as a 4th-grade military service soldier despite his bipolar disorder when he was undergoing physical examination in the Military Manpower Administration. He will enlist on July 16 and serve as a public service worker for two years.

He tried to fulfill military service duty silently without discussing it because he was worried that it would cause a lot of people trouble on that day. However, he wanted to personally tell his fans who stayed by his side for the past 27 years the news himself. He wrote a message to his homepage and we’re now relaying our official statement, we thank you for your understanding despite the late notice.”

“Jang Geun Suk was diagnosed with bipolar disorder for the first time in a university hospital in 2011 and has been re-examined at every physical examination conducted since then.

In this process, there was no request to postpone the enrollment of the actor, and he faithfully fulfilled the request of the Military Manpower Association. Recently, he received his military enlistment notice and will serve as a level 4 public service worker.

Physical examination grade reasons are personal information. While revealing the status of the actor’s health we are being cautious about it.”

“However, Jang Geun Suk grew up with the interest and love of fans. Therefore, even if it was a very personal matter, we felt that it was our responsibility to tell the public.

Jang Geun Suk did his best to overcome bipolar disorder and tried to find his own balance while suffering aftereffects in the process. He is sorry that he couldn’t get satisfactory results.

He will begin his alternative service for two years after receiving basic training starting from July 16. He will be responsible and sincerely complete his duties.

We will do our best for him to return healthier with mature appearance. Thank you.”
